Day 9: Somewhat Successful!

Well, today was better than the past two days... This morning we left Perry, KS around 9:45a.m. and began heading north. We ended up in Pratt, KS, where we waited for storms to develop and reevaluated the situation. We stopped in a park with a beautiful scenery. Check it out...

My favorite part was watching the beautiful black lab jump in and out of the lake to cool himself off. He was adorable! We also watched a few cumulus clouds begin to tower, such as the one below...

While we were out there, the Storm Predication Center issued at tornado watch for most of Oklahoma, a mesoscale discussion (MD) for the central Kansas region, and then a tornado watch for most of central Kansas (where we were). The MD was issued around 1p.m. and stated that storms would likely begin to fire up within the next hour. We noticed storms were forming to our southwest and moving northeast, so we decided to head northeast to position ourselves in a better location. We ended up in Lyons, KS, and then we traveled to Ellsworth, KS (which already had a tornado spotted earlier in the day). Although storms began to fire up within the next two hours, most were north and way south of us. It seemed to us that all the storms around began to dissipate or split before reaching our location, which was very, VERY frustrating for all us. We finally found a storm that was trackable and had severe thunderstorm potential, so we set out to chase it...and, so did every other storm spotter in America and their mothers... Although there were many people on the road, it was pretty cool to see so many other people out there doing the same thing we love to do. It was also hilarious to pass another storm chaser on the road because there would be a stare down between the vehicles to see who the other people were...haha! Weather nerds, what can I say? Even though we didn't see a tornado; we did track a pretty neat storm with decent sized hail. Check out the cool picture we got...

Terrible picture, however it shows the line of storm chasers following us on our chase... Check it out!

There they are again!...

It was also a plus to see Jim Cantore, Reed Timmer and the TIV out of the same roads we were on... We knew we must be doing something right...

Tonight, we are staying in McPherson, KS, and we will brief at 9:30a.m. about tomorrow's plan. We should be chasing in central and eastern Kansas tomorrow, but I will keep you posted if there are any changes in the plan.

Lastly, a few of us decided that today would be the perfect day to sport our 2010 Southeast Severe Storms Symposium shirts...Check out the tshirt below...

Pretty sweet, huh?!?! We were pretty pumped to sport those good looking shirts. We are also pumped about our 10th Annual Symposium on March 2 & 3, 2012! It will be a blast; so if you want more information on that event, feel free to get in touch with me!

Back to the storm chase, keep those fingers crossed and those prayers coming! Stay tuned for more details!

INSIDE JOKE: Storm Chasers love their inner child...Brittany" "Hey, look! There is a playground!...Aw man! Those kids are hogging them all...." and Wendy's kid's meals...The toys are so entertaining!...
